July 2 - Aug 22, 2009
Opening Reception Friday, July 10, 6:00 - 8:00 pm
Tomorrow is here at Steven Wolf Fine Arts in 45 gray boxes. San Francisco artist James Tantum asked 40 artists to produce a single work, based on that one word, which could fit into an 11 x 14 inch box. (Works could be folded.) Forty-five boxes have been produced, one for each artist, and five to be sold to the general public. The works span many media including photographs, drawings, edition varié and linoleum-cut prints, pamphlets, person-sized xeroxes and pre-cut, unassembled cubes. The participating artists are mostly SFAI alumni and all but one know Tantum well. Since the work was made, perhaps with the current downturn in mind, both as a dream-like escape from hard times and as a way for the artists to acquire work from each other without spending money, it feels like peeking through a window at a secret after hours art collective.
