Extreme Makeover Derek Boshier April 1, 2004 - May 1, 2004 5:30 Derek Boshier has been painting on photographs and magazine cut-outs since his emergence as a young British pop artist in the 1960s. The images grow out of a recurring optical tension between the spidery mutations on the surface and the unsuspecting pictures below. Boshier's visual world is a scattershot parade of inventions, disruptions and transformations in which friends and heroes of his youth and political bete noires from past and present are fragmented and reconstructed. Beauty, fashion, celebrity and gender stereotypes also come under the knife, emerging monstrous, haunted and unwhole.
