Opening Reception Friday, July 10, 6:00-8:00 pm
The centerpiece of Jacob Dahlgren's second show at Steven Wolf Fine Arts is video of a recent action he produced in Marin County. Dahlgren, a Swedish artist who was in the 2007 Venice Biennale, is in residence at the Headlands, where he led a group of around 30 people toting signs with abstract paintings by mid-century Swedish artist Olle Baertling through the hills above the artist compound. It reprised a 2007 march Dahlgren orchestrated through the streets of Stockholm, where officials closed down a path through the main part of the city to make way for the demonstration. In Stockholm the urban backdrop conjured visions of 1968, when student revolts in France inspired by the Situationists set the world on fire with talk of art and revolution. With Headlands as the context, Baertling's colorful, hard-edge investigations into utopian abstract space bobbed surrealy against the organic greens and browns of the Marin hills.  What began as a whimsical march full of aesthetic and perceptual pleasures soon, however, turned into a physically challenging hike. The art signs, no longer just thought bubbles in a clever outdoor painting, became heavy abstract crosses to bear, as the death march hovered above the Pacific Ocean, shimmering in the late spring California sun.
